Ashley St. Clair, Elon Musk’s ex-girlfriend and mother of their son, Romulus, is in a new documentary about him

Theformer conservative influencer says in Alex Gibney’s Musk that the Tesla chief “didn’t show a certain side of himself until after I had our baby”

According to the documentary, Musk cut his financial support of St. Clair after she spoke publicly

Ashley St. Clairis opening up in a new documentary about how she entered Elon Musk’s orbit — and the child custody battle that followed after she gave birth to their son.

“It’s very difficult to see the architecture that’s Elon’s world when you’re dropped in,” St. Clair, a 28-year-old former conservative influencer, says in Alex Gibney’s Musk, which was released in theaters nationwide on Friday, Oct. 16.

“You see just enough that you think you’re seeing the whole picture,” St. Clair says, “and you don’t ask any other questions.”

Musk’s ex is one of the more prominent voices featured in the roughly four-hour documentary.

The billionaire SpaceX and Tesla chief, 55, declined to participate in the Oscar winner’s film, publicly demeaning it as a “hit piece.” He said Gibney was biased, and a lawyer for him also threatened legal action over what they called factual distortions.

Gibney has defended his work and recreated a version of Musk for the documentary using his past statements.

In the film, Gibney scrutinizes how Musk amassed so much power in business, tech and politics — but some of the most personal revelations focus on the people affected along the way, including Musk’s ex-wife Justine and St. Clair.

St. Clair recalls in the documentary how her relationship with Musk began, perhaps appropriately enough, on the X owner’s own social media platform in 2023, which he renamed after buying it.

“When Elon started interacting with me on Twitter, I was a conservative influencer,” St. Clair says in the film, echoing her past comments about their connection. “He was responding to my posts frequently. One day, he responded to one of my Mother’s Day posts [and said] that I should have more children.”

Eventually, she says, the world’s richest man texted her that he felt “like going to” Providence, R.I., and “all of a sudden” she found herself on a private jet.

“He was very intelligent and down to earth,” St. Clair says. “He was respectful, but he was definitely strange. We were in this hotel and I’m falling asleep with him while he’s listening to an audiobook or a podcast about Kublai Khan. I just was sitting there like, ‘Really? Is this really what he’s going to sleep to?’ ”

Very quickly, St. Clair says, Musk — who now has 14 children — was characterizing himself as a “good dad” and saying that they should have kids together, seeming to indicate that he had an “amicable” relationship with Grimes and Shivon Zilis, two former and future partners and the moms of some of his kids.

“He was always saying, ‘We should have a kid. You should have so many more kids. You should have 10 kids,’ ” St. Clair says. “Eventually I was like, ‘Well, what does that look like?’ ”

She says he was “kind” up until the moment she had their son, Romulus.

According to the documentary, Musk turned to the services of a close aide and personal “fixer,” Jared Birchall.

In a recorded conversation shared in the doc, Birchall and St. Clair are heard discussing a prospective nondisclosure agreement — which she says she refused to sign in “good conscience.”

“The NDA that they had provided me was labeled as a child support agreement,” she says. “It was a lump sum of $15 million and then $100,000 a month for 20 years.” (Birchall and attorneys for Musk did not respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.)

When St. Clair declined to sign the NDA, and then publicly revealed that they had welcomed a child together in late 2024, Musk reduced her stipend from $100,000 a month to $40,000 a month, according to the documentary.

For speaking out, the documentary alleges, he then cut St. Clair’s payment in half once more, a detail that was previously reported in The Wall Street Journal.

“It was almost as if he didn’t show a certain side of himself until after I had our baby,” St. Clair says in the film.

The two became tangled in a legal dispute over their child: She sued for full custody, and he later said he would fight back in court. The custody battle is ongoing.

Now an outspoken critic of Musk’s, St. Clair says in the doc that she got messages from other people “that Elon was DMing” and “offering them children [with him].”

“There was a woman in Japan who just wanted, basically, sperm donation that he had obliged,” St. Clair says.

She adds, “It’s like a Gatling gun of sperm in his DMs.”
