Why 2026 Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo won't run in the Preakness

Golden Tempo, the 2026 Kentucky Derby winner, will not participate in the upcoming Preakness Stakes in Laurel Park.

The May 16 Triple Crown race will have to go on without this year's Kentucky Derby victor, ashistory-makingtrainer Cherie DeVauxcited Golden Tempo's general health and overall well-being as top priorities for not having him run the Preakness.

"Golden gave us the race of a lifetime in the Kentucky Derby, and we believe the best decision for him moving forward is to give him a little more time following such a tremendous effort," the statement read. "His health, happiness, and long-term future will always remain our top priority."

DeVauxadded that the Belmont Stakes remain on the table for Golden Tempo.

That's not great news for horse racing fans hoping to see another American Triple Crown winner, but it's probably best for Golden Tempo's future that he rest before a possible run at Belmont.
