The Eurovision Song Contest 2024 Grand Final has arrived and, after days of division and chaos, no one can predict how it will go.
Hours before the live show kicked off in Malmö, Sweden, the contest was thrown into chaos with jurors pulling out and refusing to announce points, entrants making powerful statements during rehearsals, and performers missing flag parades.
Earlier today, it was confirmed that The Netherlands' entrant Joost Klein will not be performing in the Grand Final. A statement was later issued by Dutch broadcasters, who described his punishment as 'disproportionate' and explained the 'investigation' into Klein's behaviour came from a 'threatening gesture' he made at the camera, having made it clear he didn't wish to be filmed.
Then, Ireland's entry Bambie Thug missed their dress rehearsal after they said a 'situation' required 'urgent attention' from organisers. Following that, France's entry Slimane interrupted his dress run by calling for peace before walking off stage. Marina Satti of Greece and Nemo of Switzerland also missed the flag parade.
Two jurors have also relinquished their responsibilities tonight, with Norway's Alessandra Mele and Finnish runner-up of 2023 Käärijä saying it 'doesn't feel right' to be part of the point-giving process.
It comes as thousands of protestors gather outside the arena, demanding the removal of Israel and continuing to put pressure on organisers.
There are now 25 countries performing tonight, with Sweden hosting the tournament for the first time since 2016 – and celebrating 50 years since Scandinavian pop sensations Abba won the contest in 1974.
Olly Alexander represents the UK with his song Dizzy, while Ireland has emerged as surprise favourites after making it to their first Eurovision final in six years.
The run-up to Malmö has been clouded in the controversy surrounding the European Broadcasting Union's decision to allow Israel – represented by Eden Golan – to compete in light of the war in Gaza, with artists taking part – including Olly – facing calls to boycott the event.
The carnage only continued as Swedish police confirmed their investigation into a complaint of inappropriate behaviour from Dutch performer Klein.
It sets the stage for a tense night for the Eurovision Song Contest, and we'll be with you through it all as the proceedings kick off on BBC One and iPlayer from 8pm.
